Paraeducator Pay Issues in Delaware

Two recent articles from delawareonline give a good overview of the importance of paraeducators in the classroom and discuss why increasing pay for paraprofessionals is a top priority.

From the first article, titled Educators lobby lawmakers over pay issues, Rep. Diana McWilliams states:

"When you go into a classroom, the paras are right there with the teachers and can be virtually indistinguishable," she said. "We need to do something to ensure they are earning a living wage."

The second article, Educators lobby lawmakers over pay issues asks this question from Robin Collins:

"We all know we could make more money somewhere else, but then who is going to take care of the kids?"

MIke Hoffman offers this explanation of why he enjoys his job while discussing helping students with daily living skills:

"People tend to do that for them. It's easier. Our goal is for them to do that on their own. I love it. I love going to work. I love seeing the kids every day," he said. "Most people don't see the potential they have. I've seen it."

I love being a Paraeducator!

I spent 40 years working for a corporation, but my first love was working with the children. I retired and I have my degree, but I watch how overloaded the classroom teachers are, and I have said no way. They have to use books that are not suitable for everyone in the class, and they have to test and teach. They have so much paperwork from the office, that I feel sorry for them. I have some wonderful teachers that I work with and they are so happy to see the ideas of an older woman, who wants the very best for EACH of my students. I spend out of my own meager pockets to help my students. I really love the websites www.starfall.com and www.aaamath.com, so I take advantage of the sales and I buy in bulk. I love the joy I see in the faces of my students, when they have their own little book. Please visit the websites and share with everyone. I have a pension, but the very best job is making a difference in the lives of others. I should be paid more, but I am paid in the success of my students. I can work one on one or with a small group, and that is heaven. When I have all 25 or more, that is not heaven, but the teacher is nearby trying to finish her testing or paperwork. I am happy not having to deal with the testing and the paper work. I am happy just to help the children see the light.
