What is your title?
I am sitting in a session listening to Anna Lou Pickett at the National conference (founder of the National Resource Center for Paraprofessionals). At the beginning of her session she talked about the titles paraprofessional and paraeducator. She mentioned that positions such as paralegal, paramedic and noted that everyone knows what those positions do and that paraeducator is more descriptive than paraprofessional
In just the first day of the conference I have heard a number of different terms: paraeducator, paraprofessional, teacher aide, instructional assistant, educational assistant...
Two Questions:
- What is the title of "paraeducators" in your school district?
- What job title do you like best?

At my school district, the
At my school district, the term "teaching assistant" (or TA) is generally used. But when we meet professionally as a group, it's usually "parapros". Personally, I like "teaching assistant" because people know what that term means, but "parapro" or "paraprofessional" isn't widely understood.

Hi Christopher, In the school
Hi Christopher,
In the school district I am working in currently they refer to us as SHADOWS. I am very insulted by this, I have told several people to go outside and tell me what their shadow does for them...... absolutely jack squat. I am formerly from NH where we were referred to as paraprofessionals, paraeducators, support staff, and any of these titles beats out being called a shadow!

By the way, hello! I live in Tucson, AZ and work in a high school.
I am a Bilingual
I am a Bilingual Paraprofessional. I was an Earobics Para, but the program did not work with the new computers, so I started rotating to different classrooms, and spending the day with one teacher. This year, I am spending the A.M. with Monolingual and Bilingual Teachers, and helping the Kindergarten teacher with special students. My hat is off to Special Education Paraprofessional, for I prefer to rotate, and not be with the same child. I have contacted my union, since I was told I had to be with one child, and go where ever he has to go in the P.M. I am not cut out to be with the same child every day, but I can be daily with a different child. I never signed on to be a Special Education Para, so the union will check and see, if I am being told to do something, not in my job description. Special Education children are in ALL the classes, and I do not mind working with a different one daily, but I also need to work with ALL the regular students also, for my sanity. I have my degree, but I am 67 years young, retired from the computer field, and I know my limits. I am also blind in one eye, so I have to protect getting hit in the one good eye, that I have.

Hi, Christopher!
At the school where I work, we have different titles. I am a "cross-categorical paraprofessional". I work with kids that have different disabilities, and "para" means "with", so I work with the professionals. We have student faciliators that work with life skills kids. "Paraeducator" would mean "with" the educators. We also just call each other teacher's aides, and that's what I tell the kids when I introduce myself.
