Starting out. Please help!
Hello, my name is Kelly and I live in Buffalo, NY. I need some general information on stating out as a teachers assistant. I have my associates degree in Humanities and I am planing on attending a 12 credit program at my college that gives you a teachers assistant certification. Do you think that this certificate alone is enough to get me a good job at a school? Also how long did it take you to find a job after you completed your certification? Is the certification test hard? I was also wondering about how I would do at this job because in school I was in a resource room. I try really hard and I get good grades but do you think that it is not a good idea for me to be helping kids with disibilites since I have one my self, please be honest? Thank you so much, sorry so many questions.

Hi Kelly,
My name is Terri, I am brand new to this site and not sure if I can answer any of your questions especially since I live in another state and our requirements may be different. I also noticed you posted this a year ago and might not need any help at this time. Just in case, here it goes.....I would think with your education you should be a great asset to any school. Where I live it will be mandatory next year for everyone to complete a Paraprofessional Training course. That course is the only requirement we have. The tests were not hard, my instructor was awsome! The school district where I live has a job posted now and I am hoping to get a job this fall. It is my opinion that you would have better insight working with children with disabilities because you have child with disabilities. My friend got her job because she grew up with a sister with MR.
If you have a job by now could you answer a couple of questions for me? As I said, I am hoping to get a job this fall and just applied for a job that had been posted. Can you tell me any questions I might be asked during an interview and what would be some good ones for me to ask as well.
