Showing kids "G" rated movies during lunch?

Does anyone know the policy on this for their own school. The teacher and I show movies like "toy story" and "the incredibles" during lunch time for the kids. They come in with their lunch, sit down, and watch the movie quietly. They may talk with one another while they are there. Is this wrong of us? Some other teacher and aide have complained to the department chair about this. We checked with the assistant principal and she said it was okay to show G rated movies as long as the teacher was okay of having them in class. What is your opinion on this? Why are others making a big issue?

Omgoodness! People really

Omgoodness! People really need to lighten up. If showing a movie violates copyright laws then that is a legitimate reason not to show it. I know for a fact that it is illegal to show Disney movies in classrooms. (Since Disney produces it, I've always been a bit curious if 'Schoolhouse Rock' was meant to be classified this way as well.) Ocassionally showing movies in school isn't the reason our children are developing habits. These are the same type of accusations that claimed school lunches where causing children to become obese. It isn't surprising to hear that it is once again the school system who is being blamed. Sadly, these things shouldn't become an issue if parents are setting a good examples at home. Point is, people should stop over-analyzing the small things and focus on the bigger issues in our school systems and society. In case you were wondering, I am a concerned parent who takes full responsibility for raising my children and not blaming others for the "bad habits" my children pick up. Thank you to the teachers out there who work so hard every day to make sure our children receive a quality education.

I am a middle school teacher

I am a middle school teacher in a NC school system. We are not allowed to show any Disney films in NC because Disney will not authorize schools to do so. Several schools have been sued for doing this. If you want to show movies during lunch show only G rated movies, and non Disney movies.

I dont think that there is

I dont think that there is anything wrong with lunch time movies. its better than have kids swearing in the school hallways, and throwing garbage all over the place. When there watching the movie, there under stirct supervision, and they are in a safe enviroment. Its better than be ing picked on out in the hallways or on the playground. And yes, that does actially happen, any sensable person would know that. besides, for those kids who dont have anything to do during lunch, who dont make friends easily, can meet people while watching a movie. As long as they have good morals etc. I think that its fine, and benefiting as well. I was one of those 'loner' students, and trust me, it wasn't fun!

Showing movies in this way

Showing movies in this way violates copyright laws and your school could be fined. You could even be personally liable for paying a four-figure fine. Any licensed movie shown to a group has to relate to the current curriculum for it to fall under Fair Use (google "Teach Act").

I don't want my kids

I don't want my kids watching TV while eating at home, I wouldn't encourage it during school time, may become a very bad habit. Especially at that age habits are easily entertained. At our school after they eat thier lunch they are encouraged to do quit activities (look at books, do puzzles, etc.)

I do not think that this is

I do not think that this is a good idea. We do watch movies at one time or another. Hovever, some kids will not eat and just watch tv. Also, tv is not a good thing for kids to watch. Alot of kids are "babysat" by tvs, and I do not think that kids need to get it everyday at school. I can see it done 1 time a month.

Our school has taked about

Our school has taked about having a reading corner. When students are done eating, they can go to a designated spot and have a book read to them. We are a PreK-12 school so our reader could be a "celebrity", a high school student, someone from administration or a parent.
