Schools that cut back hours
I was employed by a local school district that ´had budget problems´and decided that the Teacher Assistants had to pay by cutting back their work hours. I was a part-time, 30 hour mandated Teacher Assistant, working one-on-one with a special needs student. Since I was hired in February of 2007, I did not have seniority. It was easy for the school district to notify me, the week after school ended, that there were no positions available for me in September; because of budget issues and basing cut-backs on seniority levels. Lucky for me, I found other employment before I was informed that ´there were no positions for me available in September.´These budget problems started in April 2007, and it took the school district over 2 months to notify me of my status for September. Being a member of the New York State Union of Teachers (NYSUT), did´nt make a difference. I have a negative opinion of that school district. What they did was wrong. If they have budget issues, why hire me for half the year, and then tell me that there are no positions in the district for me in September? Like I mentioned, lucky for me I found other employment. This does not mean that I want my old job back, merely that the New York Public Schools should make wise decisions and consider the role of Teacher Assistants, because Teacher Assistants assist Teachers and students.
