Qualifying for Paraprofessional Certification
I have been out of the work force for over five years in order to be home with my daughter. I am now preparing to go back to work as a Paraprofessional once she starts kindergarten in the fall. It's important to note that I will be a career changer; I have not previously worked as a Paraprofessional in the school system.
I hold a Regent's Bachelor of Arts degree (concentration in Sociology) and I also have a career diploma in the Professional Teacher Assistant Program from Ashworth College in preparation to enter this career path. However, in Mineral County, where I live and will be applying for a paraprofessional position, I still need to take some 3-credit hour courses in Special Education and Classroom Management, possibly even some coursework in Professional Education to even apply for the position. I have been doing internet searches to find these courses online and, thus far, have had no luck. The classes are either offered within degree programs or as continuing education courses, which won't apply since they only offer non-credit certificates of completion. Where are there online courses offered at an accredited institution to fulfill these requirements?
Apparently, as I'm told, in Mineral County, WV, these courses need to be taken to qualify for paraprofessional certification. Then, I can only apply as a Substitute Teacher Aide when positions become available and are announced. If hired as a substitute aide, I will then proceed to take the certification test and, once awarded that, I may get a position as a teacher aide. Is this common procedure for application and, with all of my education, do I really need to do that much more to become a Teacher Aide?
I would greatly appreciate some advice and guidance on this subject. I'm not sure which direction to go at this point.
Thank you in advance for any help and information you can offer.

Hi there. I feel your pain.
Hi there. I feel your pain. I am very new into this field as well and it is overwhelming. I too stayed home with my son a few years and with a lot of circumstances arising, I am in need of a full time job with benefits. I have my b.s. degree in elem ed but its from a non-accredited college :( I'm not even sure if I need to take the para programs or get a certificate or where I need to go. I have much experience in office work and thought that would be my first choice in career, but now I am highly leaning to parapro because the hours are wonderful and vacation, etc so I can be more with my son and also keep up my p/t janitorial company. would you like to corresp on email? maybe we can work out our crazy internet search together! take care!! hope you can get the right searches and info you need. :0) Dori
