Paras & Unemployment ?

Do paras qualify for unemployment over the summer break ? I'm in Upstate NY.

Paras & Unemployment ?

Good question....let me know if you find out anything. Thanks, from Minnesota[/b]

Unemployment

My understanding at least here in MN that you have to be placed on layoff to qualify for unemployment benefits during summer break. You also have to report to the unemployment agency if the school district offered you any other positions. I was in this situation in May of 2001 and by the time I collected my first check I was recalled to another position in the district. I also had to go to an orientation at the unemployment agency and fill out a bunch of paperwork to qualify to receive it. That was really a pain! You also have to claim it on your taxes as income. I found the whole process to be very time consuming and may opt out of it if I'm ever put on layoff again. Besides, we have our paychecks stretched out for 12 months so we get paid over summer break.

upon being hired and completing all the paperwork I was informed that I'd be getting paid 12 months while only working 9! Thank God I may work at a Christian summer camp from summer to summer if I want to. For those less fortunate, I pray you find summer jobs if you want them.

Unemployment Insurance

I worked as a Teacher Aide for over 24 years and I can only recall getting unemployment only once during that time. Richard Nixon was in office and released some special funds that enabled others like me who religiously signed for unemployment one summer every week in hopes that we would get something. It came after school had started and we were asked to mail our unemployment booklets to the unemployment office with no explanation as to why. I did and a few weeks later I received a check for the weeks I had signed. Since then we were told we were not eligible because the BOE promises you a position for the coming school year. You can still get laid off during the summer months. But you aren't eligible until you get a lay off notice. People have tried to fight for unemployment, but have lost in the process. I would like to pull your coat to somthing. Get involved in your local union and become a lobbyist. This unemployment law has to change through your senate, (Hillary and others) and congress. I was a lobbist in my local and groups of us went to Albany each year to discuss issues of importance to the TA and unemployment was the first issue discussed. Good Luck!

Benefits

Hi Are your benefits cut off during the summer months? We have to pay the entire cost of our health insurance for the 3 months. 1700.00 for a single and 4000.00 for a family.

Paras & Unemployment ?

Hi weimerjm, No we do not lose our benefits for the three months. Our benefits are negotiated in our contract but it is according to how you are hired. I was hired when the Board Of Ed paid for my insurance 100%. A few years later new hires had to pay for their insurance for the first four years(with reduction in cost each year) then the BOE picked it up. During the last 15 years new hires cannot get benefits if their spouse has insurance through their job. The BOE is trying to reduce the cost of paying for insurance for it's employees. So the answer to your question is no for the three months we are off we are still covered by some form of health insurance.
