Paraprofessionals from Oklahoma

I would like to chat with para's from the Great State Of Oklahoma. There are so many laws changing in our state programs, it would be nice to visit with others that have to deal with this too. Hope to hear from ya soon. God Bless Ms JL

I am very discouraged with my

I am very discouraged with my job also. I have been a para for almost 9 years and I only make 8.75 and hour, which is 10,500 a year! Seriously we have to put up

with alot and I feel we deserve more pay than serving food at mcdonalds!!! I am very attached to the kids and wouldnt want to leave, but I feel we deserve more. I am fixing to talk

to out superintendent and ask for a raise, but probably wont get one! I will let all of yall know the outcome.

I am not sure how about laws

I am not sure how about laws changes in Oklahoma but I believe either stability have or not there peoples there should have universal life insurance as well as other insurance policies.

I work as a para in Oklahoma

I work as a para in Oklahoma at a school that doesnt give any sick or personal any kind of leave at all. They pay min. wage, and no insurance options or anything. And despite my para training and education with special needs, my check is still made out as me being just a sub. This school district would more than happy to get rid of all paras. They even find reasons to kick special needs children out of school. Not only do I have all the things that I do for my job itself, I get plenty of extra work as well some of which I have to finish at home with no pay. Things have got to change hear in oklahoma or all the good paras are going to find other places to work which means our poor children will be left being taken care of by some well questionable people.

Pay

Well in our school district they start para's out at $7.35 an hour. I have been here two years and make $8.13 and hour. I take on a lot of extra duties just to make $13,000 a year. I have a degree in business. I am in the process of doing alternative certification to be a teacher. I am a single mom of 4 kids and lets just say its poverty pay.

Jenks, Tulsa and surrounding districts pay much more than our school district. Tulsa starts at 10.00 an hour and Jenks about the same. That is with little to no experience.

needing help please

ok so i'm a paraprofessional at a school in oklahoma and my superintendent is telling me that i have to give the kids their medicines but i have not actually ben threw a parprofessional class or a nursing class.I have just taken the paraprofessional test...i have so many questions to ask..so if anyone could please write me back....

Needing help please

Wow, you should be trained. If the health care authority or the state government would come in the school could be in deep trouble. Our para's must take medication training yearly.

Union, Union, Union

I work in Minnesota and I make $15.32 per hour...you must not have a Union to represent you...CHECK THIS OUT...YOU CAN ORGANIZE YOUR SCHOOL. YOU TOO CAN BE MAKING THE MONEY THAT I MAKE.

Sue

Union, Union, Union

The union is only good as the people who is on it. Yeah I belong to the union. But if we walk out..no big deal they can hire anyone off the street and call them assistants. No need to pay for a para.

A union sounds good but the

A union sounds good but the last person to try and do so was let go. I like what I do and right now it works for me so I don't want to risk losing my job.

That's the reason nothing

That's the reason nothing will change for you. God is your source. If you keep holding on to crumbs you never get the whole cake. You are barely making it. If they let go all of the paras for trying to unionize then they won't have any help will they? What are you afraid of? That you have to go work at Wal-mart or Braums and get paid the same? for less work? That's like threatening an eskimo with ice.

what do you make in ok, is it ok with you?

I have been a para for over 8 years now in our great state of OK. I make 10,500. a year , 3 sick days, and 1 personal. I had to fight 3 years for this. I was wondering what some of you other fellow oklahoman's make? Do you have any benefits, medical, or sick leave?

I have been a para for 8

I have been a para for 8 years as well. I make about the same as you but I opt out of insuance and so I get the flex added into my salary. I get 3 personal days and ten sick days each year. If I don't use personal days they roll over to sick days that carry over. We have a great principal and ANY time we have an emergency all we have to do is tell him what is going on and he says go.Pay could be much better but I love my kids and thats why I am there.

benefits

In our school district we get 9 paid days off and 3 emergency days. Which is much better than any school district in this area. We are lucky.

I work with special ed kids

I work with special ed kids & i am talking change diapers i have one that has seizures during the day & has a magnetic device you have to run over his heart!

I get paid 8.50 an hour

This is ridiculous when i have a friend who is a cashier at wal-mart & she is making 8.10 an hour & has been employed for 2 months

Ughhhhhhhhh is all i can say.

I am glad to hear that

I am glad to hear that everyone else feels the same!!  I just don't get it--I have been with an Autistic child for five years now--the first three were hard--as i got squeezed scratched--yelled at!  The past year i had a great year with this child-i have taught him to talk in sentences--and self control--we have conversations--and he is doing his school work--i don't know about the rest of you--but what i have accomplished with this child--would have cost his parents a fortune to do it privately or with a someone else--and it is so so wrong that all of us get paid what we do!  We are these peoples life line and security--and its not right that someone at Braums or wal mart etc.  gets paid more!  WE live in poverty--but i to stay because i am attached--oh and i do all the work in the classroom while my teacher sits at a computer all day and does paperwork??  I admire all of you--you truly are SPECIAL!!

I know just how you feel. I

I know just how you feel. I am a parapro who is loaded down, more than most seem to be and at almost 40 years old, I get depressed about my salary, which is what drives me to continue getting my 4 year degree. It will take me another 3 years and it is a slow go, but if I am going to be doing the work, I figured I might as well get paid for it.
Hang in there, and think about going back to school. I sit in the floor at night and pray and cry and wonder how can I keep doing it, but I am determined to make it, and so can YOU!!

Paraprofessionals in TX

Here in TX we have a ridiculous salary. Like you, we change diapers, clean noses and mouths, feed by mouth or tube, teach life skills, we are exposed to many diseases and the parents do not care about it, of course the districts do not take the time to visit our classrooms. We are very competent, college educated (associate's degree) and we earn less than the cafeteria people. The only thing good is 5 personal days and 5 sick days during a schoool year. Also all our holidays are generous.
We really love these children and care about their future but nobody else recognizes our efforts and the progress that our children make, little by little. Our superintendent told us that we are paid "according to the market" that means no more than $10 per hour. Many of us are afraid we will lose our jobs if we complain and other ones are simply "suckers".......

I do not know how long I will be doing this job ... I am getting tired ... but on the other hand, these little angels need so much and I do not have the heart to leave them. I am doing my best and only God knows how much I care for them.

I agree..Tho O love these

I agree..Tho O love these litle children..I too change diapers and wipe noses ..ect..for the same pay as reg. paras...Our custodians make more than we do,,,

relocating

check with your new school district. They will have the list of qualifications needed ...let's hope that our hard work on getting certified will be transferrable..where will you be locating to...

Relocating/Para Test

My husband and I are relocating to Oklahoma at the end of this summer from Kansas. I have taken the Para test here in Kansas will it be good in Oklahoma?
Could some one give my some details on what I need to do.

para test

Well if its the para pro test you will be fine. Or you must take the oklahoma general education test.

pay in ok is not ok!

I do not know what you got paid where you came from but, the pay at the school I work at in OK is not good. I make $10,500. a year. I have three children. I am curious to what you will make and where you are getting a job. Maybe I should relocate.!

What do you make in OK?
