PARAPROFESSIONALS/BUS DRIVER

Is it legal for a Paraprofessional to be made to drive bus ? Can this be a part of the job description ? Can I be fired if I can't or don't want to drive a bus? Can I be harassed,threatened, or talked down to because I don't want to drive a bus. Can I be made to sub for a bus driver but a bus driver don't have to come in the class to do my job. Can I be made to drive bus for high school and middle school children but be a Paraprofessional in a elementary school. Can I be made to drive in a area I don't know anything about? This is happening in South Carolina now.........No one will help or listen to us.

I have been a paraprofessional for the past 3 years. I have worked in a classroom setting. At the beginning of the school year I was put in charge of a student with behavior problems. At the beginning of the new year, after Christmas break, I was put in charge of a student with autism. Yesterday, I was told I had to take another para's job. I started that new job today. I now have to drive to headstart and take care of a 3 year old child with cp. I am very frustrated. I have to get a level 1 CDL just to drive a van. Are para's legelly allowed to do tube feedings and handle drainage tubes? I had no time for breaks before. THis seems to be pushing things now. Am I right to feel frustrated. I need help finding out more of the legal side of working with this child.

Have you been trained by a registered nurse? If not, I would not want the responsibilty of doing that. In our district,in San Diego,CA,if a para is going to tube feed or give any type of assistance of that type to a student, we must be trained by the nurse that handles that student. Does that help? I don't know if your district is a union shop or not. You can be put in another para's position, if needed. We work for the district, not the school we work in. Does that make any sense? Colette
Driving a bus?
I will try this again....I would check with your human resources dept. and see what your job description says. In San Diego in order to drive a bus for any school district you MUST have certain licences and pass Calif. highway patrol test( written and driving. It may be that your district is overstepping their bounds. Why not contact the local Dept. of Motor Vehicles and see what they say about obtaing a school bus drivers license? That may help you...or talk to a police officer. Colette

Do you have a class B CDL? How many passenger bus? Do you belong a union?
In Iowa we have to take a 12 hour bus drivers course. At the department of transportation we have to take four written tests (general knowledge, air brakes, passenger, and s-endorsement), inspect the bus and drive. After we pass that the Department of Education issues a bus drivers permit.

Bus
I was a bus driver before I was a para. If driving the bus is a part of your job description, then yes, you have to drive the bus. Otherwise, you do not.
