I am very interested into getting in the field of teaching. I found several jobs as a teaching assistant in a school district requiring a PA Paraprofessional Certificate. I was wondering what the entails. Has anyone received this, is there testing, where do I go, what do I do. I have enrolled for elementary education/ special ed bachelors, but I only have so many credits and wont be finished with school at Drexel in time. Is there any testing or other ways to get this certification until my school is complete and I can become a PA Public School teacher?

Dear Paras:
I work at a school for children with Autism, and wish to extend a great opportunity to all paras that may already work with, or wish to work with the ASD population--and receive some great training and possibly work with families with children with ASD! It may also lead to part time child-sitting paid work with the participating families!
Please look at our October 2010 training series:
Creating Kinships: Matching Families with ASD Children with Sitters
Attendees must attend each session:
Thursday, October 7, 2010, 5:30pm-8:30pm
Thursday October 14, 2010, 5:30pm-8:30pm
Tuesday, October 19, 2010, 5:30pm-8:30pm
Thursday, October 21, 2010, 5:30pm-8:30pm
Location: VFES Activities Center
VFES, in partnership with West Chester University and Wanna Play Program is presenting this unique workshop series designed to support families with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The sessions will help: parents recognize the effects of stress on physical and mental health of all family members and the special considerations for hiring childcare for an ASD child; train people interested in working with the ASD population to assist families by allowing time for outside employment or social and/or recreational break time, and for full or part-time or intermittent paid work; and create an opportunity for parents and trainees to meet.
On the fourth evening (October 21) sitters will have the opportunity to meet parents in need of child sitting!
