Online, Competency-based Degrees for Paraprofessionals

Western Governors University offers an online alternative to help paraprofessionals meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act. WGU's online, competency-based Associate of Arts degree is perfect for many paraprofessionals because it allows them to work on their own time at their own pace. Plus, they may be able to apply knowledge and competencies already gained to accelerate their time to complete a degree. Further, for individuals interested in a pathway to teaching, the associate's degree can lead into WGU's bachelor's degree with elementary teacher certification. Founded by the state governors of the Western Governors Association, WGU was created precisely to help working adults. WGU's flexible, competency-based education approach allows students to: ? Earn their degrees at their own pace ? Demonstrate knowledge they've already accumulated ? Follow a personalized Academic Action Plan ? Work with a faculty mentor to achieve their goals faster Your district may already plan to help paraprofessionals with their tuition. In addition, WGU can help students with financial aid. WGU is one of a handful of online universities in the country allowed by the U.S Department of Education to provide federal financial aid to students through Pell Grants and Federal Direct Student Loans. Many paraprofessionals will qualify. Apply and enroll by September 15, 2002 and WGU will waive $75 of the $100 application fee. You pay only $25. And you will receive a Palm Pilot (while supplies last). To learn more, visit wgu.edu/parapro (P.S. Please feel free to forward this information to other paraprofessionals in your school and district.)
