one-on-one aide

The student that I work with will be out of school for about 4 weeks. I was notified that I was not to work during this time. There will be no pay, needless to say. Has this happened to anyone else?

medical issues

In our classroom we have several medically fragile children so we have an LPN working in our classroom. We were told that if the LPN would not be there, we were responsible for giving medical aide if necessary. I am trained in CPR but otherwise not medically trained. I feel very uncomfortable with this, however our Principal says that we are required to be trained in these procedures. Does anyone else have this problem?

Follow-up comment to medically fragile student question.

We have a nurse assigned to a specific student that is medically fragile. Under no circumstance do we assist with the student's needs, including diapering. It is in the student's plan. If the nurse if not available to be at school with the student, the student is either accompanied to school by her mother or her aunt. We are not asked nor responsible for the medical care of this student. The classroom teacher reiterates this "plan". Currently, we have a student preparing to return to the classroom after a 'close-call' - no health care plan on file and issues arised that led to calling of 911. The student is preparing to return to class with new equipment - ventilator, aspirator. We are nervous and somewhat scared regarding the student's return to school without a 1:1 nurse present for this student. (Again, the first student has a nurse, private-paid, that accompanies for 1:1 care.) Regarding your situation, if the procedures venture too far into "nursing care" I would stand up and say "No." Previously I assisted a student in need of frequent aspiration. The machine was simple enough to operate, but nowadays I'm not sure. It seems quite a liability for "us" - the compassionate paras that love our work and students, but don't want to take chances with either our professional (personal) liability and / or level of care requirements/training that would make us more "medical" then "educational" assistants.

paraprofessional unions for Indiana

Has anybody heard anything about this? It sure would help us out. No more worrying about if we have a job the next year, insurance, and 26 week pay. I work in special ed. ED room. I would like to have back-up if something were to happen legal wise. Right now we have nothing.
This is not your everyday housewife job anymore. I am a single parent trying to make it on a 12,000.00 year pay. I have to find summer work which is getting more difficult.

unions

THE SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAS IN MY TOWN IN INDIANA WENT UNION ABOUT FOUR YEARS AGO.. SENIORITY AND BIDDING RIGHTS WERE IMPORTANT TO US AND THAT WAS ACHIEVED THROUGH OUR UNION. WE ALSO GOT OUR HEALTH CARE COSTS REDUCED. WE TOO HAVE THE ISSUE OF LOW INCOME AND SINGLE WOMEN NOT BEING ABLE TO MAKE ENDS MEET. WE CONTINUE TO WORK ON THESE ISSUES THROUGH NEGOTIATIONS AND CONTRACTS.

I live in West lafayette

I live in West lafayette Indiana. We are in great need of a union. Do you know who I can contact for information?

unions

How did you acheive to even get in the union. They tell us we can be umbrelled under the teachers union. No one wants to mess with us.Do you receive 26 pays. Here in Taylor Schools in Kokomo, Indiana we make $10.63 a hour.We have not had a raise for 2 years. Very Frustrating. I love my job. But, I am going to have to find something else. There is just not enough money with the way the economy is now.

student absent

When my student was absent for a month I was given other assignments, including one on one with a child who had broken both arms, he only needed a one on one for a few weeks so that would have been a hardship on the school if I had not been available. I don't know what the rules are where you work, but I am always welcome to help in any of the special education classrooms since my funding does come out of special ed. What I'm not suppose to do, but have ended up doing, is making copies, working in the library filing books. What I do has to fall under the guidelines of special education or special needs.

student absent

Wow that stinks! I work one on one with a kindergarten student for part of the day but the rest of the time I have other classrooms I am assigned to. My student resently missed a week of school and my principal kept me busy during that time.
