higher wage with degree

If I am a paraprofessional who has just earned a bachler's degree in eduacation, isn't my district required to pay a higher wage?
Thanks, Theresa

higher wages????

Here in Southern California, in our district, we are a union house and have the merit system. We have to negotiate any pay raises. We are in the process right now of having our personnel comission look at our job descriptions and what we really do on top of those descriptions. Then we may have a leg to stand on for a raise. Like many other districts in the state, we are often paid below what custodians, file clerks, etc. are paid. We have many in our district, who also have degrees, like you do....no extra pay. Since we all have to be No Child Left Behind (federal madate)compliant...maybe we should see what we can do on a federal level. Any ideas? Colette

This is in many places

This is another example of how government works. If they truely wanted schools to have highly qualified staff they would realize that it does not come for "free". This is part of the reason why some schools continue to be short staffed in regards to para's. Let's face it, if you have student loans to pay back, bills to pay, and a family to feed, why would you be ok with not being compensated for your work? My comment to government is.... Put your money where your mouth is. We hear NCLB over and over and at the same time see staff cut at many schools because their budgets have been cut. In the end who pays? Our students. I try to be optimistic but the reality is at this rate more children will be left behind then ever before and it will be seen in the next few years when students can't pass standardized testing and therefor are unable to graduate.
