Helping a Cerebal Palsy Student Become More Self- Sufficient

Hello. I works one-on-one with a CP student. He'd does fine in every class. His mind is sharp. He is non-ambulatory and has limited use of his right hand. He uses a wheelchair. I help him to get to class and get him prepared. He is now 16 years old and I think it is time to ween him off of being so dependent. He does not even want to socialize with peers during lunchtime because I have becomne his best friend. His mother spoils, spoils, spoils him in my opinion (she 's still very nice though) and I think that this is hindering him.

How do I help him become more self-sufficient without seeming lazy? I'm there for him when he absolutley needs it (stairs, getting through crowds, etc.) Also don't want him to htink that I don't want to help him. He needs to try to be more independent. I don't want to keep him from this.
