Background check jitters

Hello everyone! I'm a 27 year old college student from San Antonio, Texas... interested in being a Teachers Assistant. Frankly, I've been arrested a number of times, mainly as a juvenile. Twice for marijuana and twice for shoplifting. The latest of these unfortunate events took place over 3 years ago and I'm wondering if these 'youthful indiscretions' (sp?) will bar me from ever working with you guys. What do you think? Is it a lost cause? Does anyone know the guidelines for various areas? Thanks in advance for any information you can share!

Background check jitters

Hi Beno, I am a TA in Bflo. I know our school district does background checks. I don't know how far the tolerance is in your district but I know that ours has become very strict now in light that many past employees have been arrested for things and the BOE finds they have records in their past. It may count against you and it might not. I think they mostly check to see if you have a record abusing children, drugs, etc. But in this day and time any record of any kind could count against you. My motto is all they can do is say yes or no. Good Luck!

Beno~ Since you are now 27, and your last "offense" was 3 years ago, that still makes you a young adult. I guess if it happened when you were a teenager, it might have been looked at differently, but 3 years ago is pretty recent. But...I would encourage you to apply for some positions. As the previous poster implied, it's yes or no...what have you got to lose? If you were fortunate to have an interview, then SHINE! You may be given a chance to validate that you've matured even though you may have made some mistakes in the past. It depends what they're looking for. If they're focusing on Character alone, it may be tougher than something more serious such as Child Abuse, etc. Good luck~give it a shot.
