??? about unions...

In NY state, a teacher aide is a civil service position. In my district, paras are covered under CSEA. We have never been happy with our union. I feel they just don't know enough about the work we do. I wrote to the AFT, asking if & how we could join them, but since both unions are affiliated under AFSCME- we could not change. My question is: Are you unionized? Which one? Are you happy with them? Any comments at all are appreciated

Union Rep

I never really took interest in my union until the day that I had a problem. I was like yea, I get to put my union dues to work but little did I know how inefficient it was. For starters, my union rep is onsite. She is the president of our chapter. Second, she has a conflict of interest. Something is said to her in "confidentiality" then all of a sudden even the secretaries know what is going on. It is like a coffee clutch at the office. Plus, she talks in front of everyone like it is a show and you really want to keep it confidential. When we had her at a meetin once, she acted as if she was a lawyer, and on top of that, she raised her voice at us like she was representing "administration" and not the "classified employees". It has been a let down. On top of that, a co worker once told her that she confirmed with a regional rep that seniority list of classified should be posted us just as the certificated are so we know who gets "bumped" if someone needs to get laid off. She told us it was confidential and it could not be posted....hummmm. Well, within a matter of weeks, it got posted.
