About the national Core Content Standards
As a professor in Kaplan University’s Educational Studies Department, I’ve been researching the Common Core Standards to help prepare our Educational Paraprofessional students enrolled in our online Associate’s Degree program. Since forty-five out of 50 states (and three territories) have adopted the Common Core Standards, it behooves educators to become familiar with what this initiative is all about. While most states had already adopted their own individual state’s curriculum standards during the “reform and accountability movement” that continued to gain steam since the 1980’s, this latest initiative developed by the National Governors Association (NGA) and Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) in 2009, identified common standards for Math, English/Language Arts and Literacy that would be consistent on a national level. At this time, only Texas, Virginia, Alaska, Nebraska and Minnesota have not adopted the Common Core State Standards. As educators, you might want to find out more information, and The Common Core State Standards Initiative at http://www.corestandards.org/ is a wonderful resource to check out!
