Bridging Quality Education through Assistive Technology
This session will provide an overview of important observations skills that document the need to invest in assistive technology (AT) for students that foster independence and engagement of content. We will look at simple tools: pencil grips, seating, wiggle seats, Velcro tabs, transparent colored file tabs, buttons/switches etc. then look at more advanced technologies such as: SMART platforms, Skype, Google Hangout, Dragon Speak, Polycom, Ipads, cochlear implants and the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI). We will review the laws of IDEA 1990-2004 and how things have changed to support students. Finally, we will share ways the Kenai Peninsula School District in Alaska has supported purchasing AT as well as post secondary institutions through grants and federal funds.
