Above and Beyond “Sound It Out”: Using Prompts to Support Readers
Session Objectives Participants will: • Recognize early reading behaviors and the three cueing systems of reading. • Identify and use prompts that support early reading behaviors and student use of the cueing systems. • Describe scaffolded instruction through the use of the gradual release of responsibility. In this session, participants will learn about the three cueing systems of reading and how to support students by using prompts. First, they will be shown examples of how the meaning, structure, and visual cueing systems are used or not used by students. Then specific prompts which support strategic reading, based on the work of Fountas and Pinnell, will be explained and demonstrated. The role of the gradual release of responsibility in the use of prompts will be discussed. Using leveled texts, participants will have the opportunity to practice using the prompts.
